Of Incest, the Bardo Thodol, and Meher Baba’s Manifestation

We’re never going to have accurate statistics about incest because it is shameful and both perpetrators and victims have rights to privacy. But what we need in the public domain is accurate and useful doctrine about it, because then you can understand it when it happens, instead of flying off into some thoroughly dysfunctional extreme about whether it happens or not, and what the prevelance might or might not be in some given population.

One of the extreme views that automatically crops up about incest is that when it happens between a parent and their offspring, it is always the parent’s initiative and the parent’s fault. Frankly, I find little evidence for this automatic assumption. One thing that militates against it is Dr. Sigmund Freud’s observation that in the general case, little boys actively (but not usually consciously) want to have sex with their mothers, and little girls actively (but not usually conscsiously) want to have sex with their daddies. It’s very normal, and I can remember being one of those. The esoteric causality for Freud is clearly stated in the “Tibetan Book of the Dead,” the Bardo Thodol. Having failed to gain enlightenment by identifying with any of the five meditation Buddhas, the soul about to be born views couples in sexual union, and enters the womb of the woman he finds most attractive, in the case of the male, and from her is born into this world. The female enters the womb of the woman who will compete with her for her chosen lover’s attention in her earthly life to come. What else could explain daughters’ automatic and perfectly outrageous trips with their mothers?

Children who are conscious on that level are usually also intelligent enough to keep their mouths shut about it, and to squelch the whole tendency for fear of retribution by the parent of the same sex, but there are exceptions. Families that “prey together” are not necessarily originated by sexually deviant parents. This easily could have been the kids’ idea to start with, and then the parents discovered that they really, really liked the whole idea because, for one thing, it gave their teenagers a reason to stay home more, and so forth.

But it’s still wrong isn’t it? Yes it is. But what I’m saying is that silence, blind ignorance, learned helplessness, obligatory victimhood, the systematic failure to own one’s actual personal perceptions as a coping mechanism in the general case, and social and institutional denial of observed and/or reported facts in the general case, are not helpful in dealing with incest. The light of consciousness must be brought to solve this, and in our mainstream society as it exists today, this cannot be done through silence and denial. What’s known to happen must be discussed. Only then can the ethical issues in it be effectively addressed and resolved. When extreme views prevent general understanding, then no individual case can be effectively remediated. Also forget benign neglect. That never corrects this, it just allows it to continue to ramify through life, and almost inevitably into something truly ugly and destructive.

And what does this have to do with Meher Baba’s Manifestation? Everything. The last paragraph is 90% of what Meher Baba’s Manifestation is at this point. Forget “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” pie in the sky and Old Testament Armageddons alike. Both of those are just dysfunctional myths. Meher Baba’s Manifestation happens when He speaks the Truth that He has implanted in our hearts as our own, and what does He speak to? Incest. Sexual predation in the general case, whether at Meherabad or elsewhere. The viciously unsolved murders of Westerners in India, whether at Meher Colony or elsewhere. Gang rape, whether in India or elswhere. Graft and fiscal corruption, whether at AMBPPCT or elsewhere. When what is owned, spoken, and resolved is the same as what is actually happening, that is Meher Baba’s Manifestation. That is the Truth that He took birth to give us, and He does not give it apart from our participation with Him in it.
